The European Marine Observation Data Network (EMODnet) is an initiative of the European Commission Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) as part of its Marine Knowledge 2020 strategy. The main objective of the initiative is to assemble existing marine data, data products and metadata from diverse sources in a uniform way.

The Continental Shelf Department participated in the Geology Lot of the EMODnet project as part of a European consortium made up of 36 organisations, principally the geological survey organisations of 30 countries surrounding the regional seas of Europe. The consortium was led by the British Geological Survey. EMODnet-Geology ran for three years from October 2013 to October 2016. Meetings of the project partners where held bi-annually and one of meetings was held in Malta in September 2014.

The project delivered harmonised geology datasets from offshore Europe. The data compiled in the project includes:

  • Seabed substrate
  • Seafloor geology
  • Coastal behaviour
  • Geological events and probabilities
  • Mineral occurrences

More information can be found on the EMODnet central portal (www.emodnet.eu/geology) and at the geology portal (www.emodnet-geology.eu).

The Department shall also be taking part in the next phase of EMODnet starting in 2017. The project has a duration of two years with a possible extension of another two years.
